Lydia is a scholar, but books are her downfall when she meddles in the plots of the most powerful man in the Celendor Empire. Her life in danger, she flees west to the far side of the Endless Seas and finds herself entangled in a foreign war where her burgeoning powers are sought by both sides.

Killian is Marked by the God of War, but his gifts fail him when the realm under the dominion of the Corrupter invades Mudamora. Disgraced, he swears his sword to the kingdom’s only hope: the crown princess. But the choice sees him caught up in a web of political intrigue that will put his oath – and his heart – to the test.

With Mudamora falling beneath the armies of the Corrupter, Lydia and Killian strike a bargain to save those they love most—but it is a bargain with unintended and disastrous consequences. Truths are revealed, birthrights claimed, and loyalties questioned—all while a menace deadlier and more far-reaching than they realize sweeps across the world.

Dark Skies is the second installment in the Dark Shores series. The first book follows Teriana and Marcus story, and the second book is Lara and Killian’s story. It’s not a stand-alone series and there will be spoilers for first book because this book’s storyline runs parallel to the first one. Coming to the book, I really enjoyed it. It has great characters, amazing world building, and an incredible storyline.

The story follows Lara, daughter of a Senator who’s suffering from an illness. Terriana(first book mc) is her best friend who travels with her mother. Before he dies, Lara’s father wants to secure a marriage with someone who can look after her after he was gone. When he chooses the cruel and manipulative Cassius, Lara wants to escape from her home. When Lara learns about Cassius’s evil plans, she flees to the west. After her escape attempt, Lara ends up in a strange place where she meets people with magical abilities and monstrous dragons. She’s surprised to find that they aren’t even aware about the great Celendor Empire and its vast army. Lara needs to find her way back home so that she could stop Cassius and save her loved ones.

Lara is the secondary character in the first book but in Dark Skies, she’s the main character. She’s sweet, caring, and very brave. She can’t see clearly without her spectacles. She might not be as tough as Teriana, but she’s not damsel in distress either. Killian is a new character and I really liked him. He’s a commander. After he failed to protect the gate and his troops, he was sent home in disgrace. The council punishes him by making him a personal bodyguard of crown princess who wants to dethrone her father. I quite enjoyed the slow burn romance between Lara and Killian. They’re from different worlds, but they’re both fighting against corruption. If you’re wondering, it’s not another enemies to lovers romance like the first one but you’re still going to love these two. Together, they make a great team. Coming to the secondary characters, I hated the Crown Princess but I really liked the female body guards.

The plot was well written and well executed. There was magic, action, political intrigue, and romance. It was a great experience reading a book that was running on the same time span as the first one. I enjoyed going through the same scenarios of the first book from Lara’s POV. The pacing was perfect. I never felt the need to skip the pages. It was a captivating read. The author’s writing was engaging throughout. The world building was fabulous. It was a brutal world filled with poverty, hunger, darkness, danger, and political corruption. If that isn’t enough, there are also monstrous dragons, and a blight that’s slowly killing all the living beings.

Overall, I loved this book! If I had to be honest, I enjoyed Lara and Killian even more than Terriana and Marcus. I’m super excited to see them all getting together and battling against evil and corruption.

Recommend it?

I highly recommend this series to all the YA fantasy fans!

I love when a second book’s characters call to me even more than the first. I’m glad this one was such a hit!
