The Republic of Itreya is in chaos. Mia Corvere has assassinated Cardinal Duomo and rumors of Consul Scaeva’s death ripple through the street of Godsgrave like wildfire. But buried beneath those same streets, deep in the ancient city’s bones, lies a secret that will change the Republic forever.
Mia and her brother Jonnen must journey through the depths of the ancient metropolis. Their quest will take them through the Godsgrave underdark, across the Sea of Swords, back to the library of the Quiet Mountain and the poisoned blades of Mia’s old mentors, and at last the fabled Crown of the Moon. There, Mia will at last discover the origins of the darkin, and learn the destiny that lies in store for her and her world. But with the three suns now in descent, and Truedark on the horizon, will she survive?
Darkdawn was an epic finale to the Nevernight Trilogy. It was one of my highly anticipated books of 2019. So far, this series never failed to impress me and Darkdawn was a good conclusion but it definitely wasn’t my favorite. Even though I enjoyed reading it, there are some parts that left me angry and disappointed. The following review contains major spoilers for the previous installments. If you haven’t read the series, but plan to then please skip reading the below review.
The story continues from where it was left off in Godsgrave. Mia is shocked to find that her little brother Jonnen is alive and she finally assassinates her enemy Consul Julius Scaeva, her real father. The whole Republic of Itreya is in chaos and Mia is on the run with her reluctant brother who hates her. But her journey isn’t over, she embarks on another quest which unveils shocking secrets about her destiny as a darkin. Soon Mia learns that her fight with Scaeva isn’t over yet and now she must fight a force much darker and powerful than her.
Mia was a fierce female protagonist. I enjoyed her character growth from the start to the end. Her journey finally ends in Darkdawn. She had to make some tough decisions and sacrifices. She experiences heartache and loss, but she still stood strong and fought till the end. Coming to the secondary characters, I’m not fan of Ashlynn after what she had done to Tric in Nevernight, but in this book I absolutely hated her. She was quite a jerk towards Tric and damn she wasn’t even sorry about it. Tric makes a surprising comeback like rise from the dead. He harbors many secrets and I really felt sorry for him. He deserved so much better than that. It was totally unfair. I hate you Mr. Kristoff! How could you do this to us?
Mister Kindly and Eclipse never fails to bring a smile to my face. I always enjoy their banters. I loved the grumpy Mercurio. He was like a father figure to Mia and I really enjoyed the relationship between them. And finally not to forget the sibling relationship between Jonnen and Mia. Their bond was well executed. We also meet some new interesting characters in this book, but I’m not going to mention them because I don’t want to spoil the story for you guys.
The plot was engaging filled with action, mystery, gore, death, violence, adventure, and magic. There are so many twists and turns that kept my interest throughout, but I hated the unnecessary triangle. It was my major issue in the book. Mia was torn between her old love and new love. I didn’t care much about the smut scenes between Mia and Ash. I honestly wouldn’t have any issue with them being together, but the way Ash treated Tric in this book was awful. She acted like a bad bitch and I’m not really fan of characters like that. The pace was overall good but some of the scenes were too slow. I quite enjoyed the final showdown between Mia and Julius Scaeva. The writing was addicting, as always. I skipped reading the footnotes, but I did enjoyed them in the first two books. The book was written in multiple Perspectives. I liked the world building, and the magic was just amazing. We finally get the answers on the origins of Darkin.
Despite issues, I overall enjoyed it but my favorite in this trilogy was Godsgrave. I absolutely loved that book. The ending left me sad. As expected, the series concluded with a bittersweet ending. I’m really gonna miss this world and its characters especially Mia and Mr. Kindly.
I highly recommend this series if you love action packed Adult fantasy, intriguing magic, LGBTQ romance, and kickass heroines.
