RELEASE DATE: September 03th 2019
AUTHOR: Klarissa King
GENRE: New-Adult, Dystopia Fantasy, Mythology.
PUBLISHER: Independently Published
SUMMARY:
For centuries, Pestilence has tried to fall out of love with Death—the reason for her curse. But with her heart and mind at odds, humanity’s fate doesn’t stand a chance in her cold, grey hands.
Pestilence and Shadow, her trusted steed, walk the earth to deliver plagues upon the humans. But when they wake to a world they don’t recognise, Pestilence must learn to navigate the advanced technology of the humans and evade their interest in her.
It isn’t long until videos of her destruction are spread across the human world.
Soon, Pestilence finds herself with more than just her steed as her shadow. Now, the humans and Death are tracking her to the ends of the earth.
This mission is different. There’s a new Horserider, War, whose bloodthirst can only be matched by Pestilence’s, and he carries with him a past so mysterious that Pestilence suspects he hasn’t come to end just the humans, but her, too.
And Death, after centuries, suddenly yearns for her again.
Something is different about this mission. Something is different about the Horseriders.
And it’s something Pestilence must uncover if she’s to outlive the species she loathes so much and survive whatever malevolence Death and War are brewing.
The end has come … but for who?
*I received an eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Pestilence is the third installment in the Feared Fables series which is a collection of dark and twisted retellings of fairytales and myths. Every book in this anthology has gripping storyline filled with complex characters and this one didn’t disappointment me. I think this one’s my favorite book in the entire series so far. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. I also love the new cover which is quite prettier and more badass than the first one.
The story follows Pestilence who’s awoken to a world that she’s not familiar with. Everywhere there is a threat of technology that can record her every move but pestilence doesn’t care mind about the change, she’ll just do her usual job which is spreading the plague. When she feels the pull of her ex-lovers call Death after so many years, she ignores him because he’s the one responsible for her cursed life and she can’t forget his betrayal. When the four horsemen’s leader Famine tells her to help the newly awakened war, pestilence feels suspicious about the new mission. She later comes to learn that war is there to end not only humans but also her. She also discovers that Death is brewing something malicious and forbidden. Pestilence isn’t ready to give up everything and she wouldn’t go down without a fight.
I loved Pestilence and her horse Shadow. I adored the friendship and the connection between them. It was my favorite aspect. Pestilence is a strong character. She spreads plague because it’s her job but she isn’t completely merciless. She’s pretty tough and I quite enjoyed her character. Her sidekick Shadow is gentle, funny, and very much loyal. Coming to the secondary characters, I liked War. He’s quite mysterious and seems like a total alpha male. I wish we had more of him in this book. I would love to know more about his backstory. Death is also an interesting character but he didn’t appear in the first half. I enjoyed the history between him and Pestilence. It’s a bit sad how it was ended. There’s also famine, but honestly I didn’t care much about her.
The plot was gripping and engaging throughout. I easily finished it in two sittings. The pacing was perfect and the author’s writing seems to be more improved. The book was mostly written in Pestilence POV but we also get a few glimpses of Pestilence and Death’s Past which was written in third person POV. There are some twists and turns which I really loved. The whole dystopian setting was nice. It’s a story about the four horsemen so we didn’t get to explore much of the outer world. Overall, it was a great addition to the series and I’ll look forward to the author’s next work.
Recommend it?
Yes
I would highly recommend this series if you’re into dark and twisted fairytale retellings. Each book in this series are not related to each other and can be read as a stand-alone. They’re not your typical fairytale love stories with sweet endings so be warned.
MY RATING:
[4/5 Stars]

Definitely one on my TBR list! I don’t know if it’s right to say I enjoy these dark retellings exactly given just how dark they are, but they’re good challenging stories. Glad Pessie sounds so different from your usual MC (although with Feared Fables, what would you expect?)

Yeah, Pessie was definitely a unique character. She was neither a hero nor a evil villain. I really hope you enjoy the book when you finally get around to it! 😊

ooooh another horsemen series!! Is this one I would enjoy Raven? Or is it too graphic? I love the sound of Pestilence and her friendship with Shadow. It sounds like that was the best part of the book! I’m glad you’re enjoying the series so much. ❤️

There’s not too much Graphic in this series! You can definitely give it a shot if you like dark and twisted fairytale retellings. BTW it’s not a horsemen series. The whole trilogy is a collection of fairytale retellings and each book can be read as a standalone.

Oh I actually didn’t know about this series! It’s funny how the Four Horsemen seem to have become trendy in romance these days – reminded me of this other series by Laura Thalassa, though that one is quite different I think.
So glad you enjoyed this one more than the others, Raven! 🙂 That’s a great sign. I love retellings, as you know, so I’ll be sure to check this one out sometime!
Wonderful review, hon ❤

Yeah, this one is quite different than the Laura Thalassa’s four Horsemen series. It might sound like a romance read but it’s definitely not. If you like dark and twisted retellings then I highly recommend this series.
Thank you! 💕
