MY REV (Copy)

This book was one of my anticipated sequels of 2019! Last year, I loved Honor Among Thieves, the first book in this unique YA sci-fi series. So, I jumped into this book as soon as I got my hands on it. After finishing it, I was kinda left with mixed feelings. It was a good sequel but sadly I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I found the first half of the book pretty slow but I did loved the second half. The world building and the action was great. I would give them five stars. I loved Nadim and Zara! I’m still shipping them pretty hard. The below summary contains spoilers for the first book, Please skip that part if you haven’t read the book.

The story continues two weeks after the events in the Honor Among Thieves where Zara, Beatriz and Nadim barely escaped from the dangerous Phage Swarm who’re hell bent on annihilating Leviathans. The battle leaves the Young Leviathan Nadim, and Eldest Leviathan Typhon weak. They all need a safe haven until they recover and their only option is Sliver, a wild, dangerous warren of alien criminals. They need money for supplies, armor and weapons so they make a deal with the head of the sliver but things take a worst turn when they unleash an enemy even more terrifying than the phage. Now the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of Zara and her crew.

Zara was total badass in this book. After the events in the first book, she grew more strong. I adored her loyalty and selflessness. I liked how she handled difficult situations with her quick thinking. I love Nadim! His bond with Zara and Bea has grown more strong. The friendship between them is so heart warming. Nadim and Zara has some unique intimate bond. My instincts were never wrong, I knew from the start that what they feel for each other is more than friendship. Although It might seem strange, I totally dig it. But the sudden thing between Zara and Bea, that really confused me. It made things a little complicated for me. Is this like a threesome thing? I really hope not. This book also has some interesting side characters but my favorites are Chao-Xing (another badass girl), Typhon(grumpy old Leviathan), and Starcurrent( a refugee tentacle alien with good humor). I almost forgot about the autodoc EMITU. That bot was hilarious! I hope Zara doesn’t change his programming in the future.

The plot was interesting but it has a very slow start which I’m not really fan of. Except for the pit fights nothing exciting happens in seventy percent of the book but the last thirty percent definitely makes up for it. I thought the Phage was our ultimate villain but damn these two authors knows how to surprise readers. I can’t wait to know what happens next. The writing was good. I’m a little disappointed that this book didn’t have multiple POV’s. I really enjoyed Zara’s POV and Nadim’s interludes but I still hoped for Nadim and Bea’s POV in this book. We also get some glimpses of what’s really happening on earth. It looks like Bea’s enemies on earth will not give up on hunting her.  The world building was fantastic! It was the best aspect of this series. I loved exploring Sliver and meeting different kinds of Alien species.

Overall, it was a good sequel and I really liked it but sadly it’s not going into my favorite list! The book finally concludes with a minor cliffhanger but I’m still quite excited for the next book.

I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for a unique YA sci-fi read filled lots of space adventure and action.

Yeah I felt like you did Raven… the first half was a whole lot of boring world building for Sliver! I did love the new character at the end though!! ❤

Great review. I read the first book last year, but I’ve slowly lost interest for some reason. I’m not sure if I’ll pick this one up or not. Especially if it was slow.

Yeah, I’m undecided on if I’ll ever pick it up. I read an arc of the first one, so I don’t own it.

Well I agree with you on your favorite characters and on the (I hope not) threesome! It got me confussed too Raven but I fear this is where the authors are headed to!

I’m glad you agree with me! IKR? It was a little cringey for me. There’s no chemistry between them. It was sudden and unexpected. I hope it doesn’t hinder my enjoyment in the next book!

That’s so hard when the majority of the book doesn’t have anything exciting happening. I’m hoping that the third book will be a bang of action, emotions and everything else fabulous! *fingers crossed*

Oh I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book, Raven! But it’s the sequel curse, it’s never as good as the previous one… Well, not usually anyway (at least in my experience) :/
Too bad the first half was so slow! I’m glad the second one made up for it and that the romance is swoon worthy 🙂 Sometimes that’s enough to turn me off a series xD
Amazing review, hon ❤ I might check Honor Among Thieves soon!

It’s not a bad sequel but it failed to captivate me as much as the first one! Some people loved it but it was a little too slow for my taste. I really hope the third book is better! Oh, that’s great! I hope you enjoy Honor among theives if you decide to give it a shot! ❤️

I hate that this one didn’t start off on a good note for you. I get what you’re saying, though. Slow starts are not good. It makes me sad that this was one of those. I haven’t read the series nor am I planning on it (not really my thing), but I’ve always been impressed with Rachel Caine’s writing. It’s sad to hear that she didn’t knock this one out of the park. Great review, though!

It’s too bad that this book didn’t have the wow factor that you had hoped for. The slow start would be something that would bug me as well. Sometimes there is a pay off for sticking it through, but it sounds like this one didn’t have that. I hope that you enjoy the next series you read a bit more! 🙂

Good that the second half picked up, even if the first half was slow. It does sound really unique and interesting. Great review!
