Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) By Ilona Andrews [Review]

Adult, Sci-fi, Urban-Fantasy, Magic.

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is…different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, “normal” is a bit of a stretch for Dina.

And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night….Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

“When a man takes up arms, he does so for many reasons. Sometimes to punish, sometimes to intimidate or frighten. But when a woman picks up a weapon, she means to kill.”

I’ve been wanting to read this series for ages and recently I’ve picked up the first book Clean Sweep and I really liked it. It has an engaging story line and a pretty likable protagonist. I thought this was an urban fantasy read but surprisingly there is a lot of sci-fi elements in this book. I also liked the beautiful illustrations of  the characters. I wish every fantasy book has these character  illustrations. This is actually my first Ilona Andrews book. Although it wasn’t my favorite read, I found it very entertaining and fun. I think it’s a good start to a series and I’ll look  forward to the next book.

All the characters in this book were enjoyable. Dina Demille, the inn Keeper was a strong protagonist. She’s hilarious, badass, and a witty heroine. I really loved her character and her magical broom which is a deadly weapon. I also loved her Shih Tzu named Beast. She was adorable yet dangerous little monster. The supernatural love interests Arland, the vampire, and Sean, the werewolf were pretty fun but I’m not fully impressed with them yet. However, I really enjoyed their rivalry and the fun banters between them. Arland was a total gentleman with his warlord appearance. Sean was a total alpha male with a swoon worthy physique. Currently, I’m not fan of either of them but If I had to choose one, I would pick the Vampire. I absolutely loved Caldenia, Gertrude Hunt Inn’s permanent House Guest. She’s an old monarch vampire who loves teasing about eating people and their delicious organs. She always cracked me up with her jokes. And finally we have a magical Inn which is actually a living being who is very protective of her mistress.

The plot was engaging and fun but the middle part seemed a little slow to me. Nothing exciting happens until the ending which was a bit disappointing. Although the typical triangle was very entertaining, I’m glad that it’s not the central focus of the story. I  liked all the sci-fi elements in this book. The writing style of the duo authors was witty and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The book was written in Dina’s first person POV. The world building and the magic was great. I really liked the world the authors had created and also some interesting monsters like the stalkers. They’re so creepy! The book was set in a small texas town named Red Deer but I hope we get to explore some alien world in the next book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It was a fun ride filled with magic, action, mystery, humor, and a little romance. There is no huge cliffhanger at the end but there are some questions that is still left unanswered. So, I’m definitely checking out the next book.

This author isn’t really my thing, but I tried her before. My friends loved her books. I’m sorry this one wasn’t a 5 star, but at least you enjoyed it.

I didn’t realize this was your first Ilona Andrews book! I still need to finish one by her… I started Magic Bites years and years ago but I wasn’t pulled in in that first chapter. So I stopped reading. But her writing sounds intriguing and I always love banter! I’m looking forward to your thoughts on how this series progresses, maybe I should be trying this one instead of Magic Bites again.

I’ve been really curious about this series for ages too- glad it was engaging and the mc was likeable. This sounds very entertaining, other than the middle slowing down a little. Great review!
