This book was so entertaining and unique! I really didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did.  I’ve heard mixed reviews about it so I didn’t put any high expectations on it.  I’m glad that I still gave it a shot. This book will feel like a classic fairytale that features a prince, a princess, evil witch, monsters, dragon, and a magical true love kiss. Despite the predictable plot, I enjoyed the whole journey. I liked how Lindsay weaved this tale filled with action, adventure, magic, and romance. I loved the story, the concept, the setting, and the characters. For a debut novel, this was really a good start and I’m definitely looking forward to the author’s next book.

In the war against the forces of darkness, the power from a royal blood’s kiss is the only thing that can kill the monsters of darkness, but now they’re losing. In the Kingdom of Myria, the royal kisses are used to enhance the powers of soldiers, but no feelings were involved because it was absolutely forbidden or taboo. Princess Ivy is a pure descendant to the original queen Myriana which makes her kiss more powerful than the other Royals. When her kiss fails to save her partner, Ivy gets devastated. Now she has to choose another partner if she wants to enter the battlefield. The council assigns her a prince from Saevall who’s rumored to be a powerful swordsman. When Ivy finally meets the clumsy prince Zach, she isn’t sure that he could match her power. Zach is trained for the battle since he was young but he never used kisses as a weapon because he believes it is a symbol of love. When Ivy and Zach are paired together, Zach refuses to kiss her which will jeopardize Ivy’s plans for saving her kingdom. They both try to convince each other, but in the end they fall for each other which was not in their plans to save the world.

I really enjoyed Ivy and Zach. Ivy is fierce, stubborn, caring, and selfless princess. She always wanted to help save her kingdom and make her mother proud of her. I didn’t like Ivy’s emotionless mother, she was too cold and harsh towards her daughter. In her childhood, she had suffered loneliness until she met Bromley who was assigned as her page. Brom is a fourteen year old boy. He’s cute, protective, loyal, and sweet. The familial relationship between Ivy and Brom is adorable. Despite their huge differences in social status, they’re as close as siblings. Prince Zach was an interesting character. He’s sweet, fun, caring, and totally charming. His first appearance as the clumsy prince quite intrigued me and I wanted to know more about him. The romance between Ivy and Zach was so good especially their banters. I loved it. To be honest, I was a bit afraid that it would be another cheesy romance, but it was definitely not that.

The plot was fun and entertaining filled with right amount of action, adventure, and romance. Even though most of the parts were predictable, I enjoyed every minute of it. It has a slow start, but don’t worry the pace picks up speed as the story progresses. I loved the whole concept about True Love’s Kiss which is definitely what makes it unique from other YA books. I liked the writing. It was simple and easy to understand. The book was told from Ivy’s first person pov. The world building was not bad, but I wish there was  more of this world. It was quite a fascinating world filled with magical curses, magical kisses, and magical creatures like ax-wielding dwarves, trolls, goblins, and griffins.

  Overall, I really liked this book! It had its flaws, but I still had so much fun reading it. The whole journey was a magical ride. The ending part felt a little bit rushed, but it’s okay. I’m quite satisfied with that ending.

Recommend it?

I highly recommend this book to all the fairytale lovers. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but if you’re looking for a fun fantasy stand-alone novel with fairytale themes then you must pick this up.
