Well chums, I finally read the epic finale of this epic series and it was amazing! It’s one of my top most anticipated books of this year and it didn’t disappoint me. This actually felt a little bit less intense and slow than the second book, but it was definitely a great finale with a satisfying conclusion. I went through so many feels while reading this book. It’s so good to meet all of my favorite characters once again especially AIDEN. We get to meet a new set of main characters Asha and Rhys. I loved every aspect of this book such as the heart pounding action, suspenseful plot and the witty humor. The third book followed the same unique format and Marie Lu’s  beautiful illustrations. Although I loved this book, my favorite book in this entire series is Gemina. Amie and Jay did a great job in building this wonderful masterpiece and I’m pretty sad that this series is finally over but it’s  definitely one heck of a roller coaster ride.

SUMMARY:

The story continues from where it was left off at the final Tribunal scene in Gemina. Kady, Ezra, Hanna, Nik and the gang has nearly escaped with their lives from the attacks at Heimdall station. After bi-tech completely wiped out Heimdall station, they’re now travelling in Mao Container ship along with 2000 refugees. With the resources running low,  they’ve no choice but to return to Kerenza where it all started seven months ago. In the mean time at Kerenza IV, Bei-tech is trying to repair Mobile jump Platfrom Magellan while keeping the remaining Kerenza survivors as prisoners. And Here comes Asha Grant, Kady’s cousin who somehow survived the Beitech initial attack.  She’s a pharmacy intern but now reluctantly works as a Medic for Bei-tech. She hates Bei-tech for the atrocities committed against them so she secretly joins the underground rebellion. When she meets the new Electronics Tech Engineer, her whole world turns upside down once again because it’s none other than her ex-lover Rhys Lindstorm who now works for Bei-Tech. They didn’t imagine that they would stand in opposite sides. Asha don’t want to repeat the same mistake once again but when old feelings resurfaces, things become complicated for them. If the Magellan gets fully functional, the Bei-tech will completely wipe out the remaining Kerenza to erase all the evidence of  their cruel atrocities. In this final battle with Bei-Tech, blood will be shed and not everyone is going to make it out alive.

CHARACTERS:

This book highlights all our favorite characters along with the new set of characters. We have Kady, Ezra, and AIDAN from Illuminae, Hanna, Nik and Ella from Gemina, and the new additions Asha and Rhys. Honestly, I really liked the new characters but I didn’t emotionally connect with them as much as I did with the other characters. I love Hanna, Nik and Ella, but Kady, Ezra and AIDAN are my favorite in this series. Kady has grew into a strong and mature women. This girl never gives up even if the odds are against her and that’s what I love about her.  Ezra is an incredible guy. I love his fun, witty and sweet personality. Kady and Ezra together makes an adorable couple who understands each other really well.  AIDAN(Artificial Intelligence Defense Analytics Network) is my NO 1 favorite character in this entire series. He always steals the spotlight whenever he makes an appearance. This book is incomplete without him. When he started to show his complex and emotional side, I felt pretty sad for him. His human emotions tug at my heartstrings. Hanna Donnelly, our favorite blondie kicked ass in this book too. I love her tactical brain and fighting skills. After escaping from Heimdall station, she’s trying to deal with her loss. Nik is totally hilarious and he never fails to brighten the mood. Even though he has saved the world in Gemina, he was treated like an outsider in Mao because of his criminal record. After the events in Heimdall Station, we’re still not sure about the relationship between Hanna and Nik but I’m glad the authors gave some focus on that part in this book.

Next we have Ella, our favorite snarky little hacker who’s also called Spider. She doesn’t have much spotlight like others but she always played a major role in the background. The witty banters between Ella and Nik is something that I always enjoy especially their chat sessions “lorem ipsum maximus butticus” LMAO. l also liked the friendly bond between Nik and Ezra. Coming to our new additions, Asha is a strong character who’ll do anything to protect her loved ones. Like her cousin Kady, she’s very brave and determined person. I really liked her relationship with the little girl Katya. Rhys is the only character that I couldn’t connect with in this book but he’s really not a bad character. The relationship between Rhys and Asha is complicated. They have a past that ended pretty badly but now they need to work together. Even though they’re not my favorite couple, I was still rooting for them and I quite enjoyed their secret conversations through paper messages. As for the side characters, I liked Captain Syra boll,  Isaac Grant,  Duke Wozniak and Yukiko Oshiro. Captain Syra boll is a tough woman and a great commanding figure who makes sure everything is running ok and there’s no trouble. Isaac Grant, Kady’s father is a great father figure who supported the gang even though some people are butt hurt about being commanded by kids. It was hilarious watching him trying to stop them from swearing in the chat sessions.  Duke Wozniak is a total fun character who refers to himself in third person. He’s missing half of his tongue thanks to his ex-girlfriend. He’s playing for the enemy side but I still liked him. Yukiko Oshiro is Rhys’s sergeant who’s ordered to look after him and keep him from making any trouble. She wears an hard exterior which says that she doesn’t care about what she’s doing but sometimes we see a glimpse which says that she does care. My least favorite character in this book was Ben Garver, I hated him more than Frobisher.

PLOT/WRITING:

The plot was brilliant, and well executed! I was sucked into the story as soon as I started it and it was hard for me to put this down even for a sec. The pacing was perfect. I actually wanted to finish It in one sitting but it was a large book and my eyes needs some rest so I finished it in two sittings. I loved every part of this book including the swearing thing, there’s a hell of a lot of fu**s and S**ts in this book so be warned. I loved all the action,  adventure, humor, and the tense atmosphere the authors has created. The plot twists made the story even more intense and there were some WTF moments which has Jay Kristoff’s name written all over it because I know that guy loves messing with us readers mind I still can’t get over godsgrave. There’s a lot of death and brutal violence in this book which might be uncomfortable to some readers. Besides The IM chats, Messages, and Illustrations, I enjoyed how the story was told through surveillance footage scenes shifting between Container Ship Mao, and Kerenza IV. The identity of the person describing the surveillance footage was a mystery till the end but it was not too hard to guess. The ending was a whirlwind of emotions because you want everyone to make it out alive and that experience will totally stress you out.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Overall, I freaking loved this book! Even though it’s not my favorite book in this entire series, it was an amazing finale and it deserves all the praise. I’ll definitely miss all the characters especially AIDAN. This series would make a great sci-fi movie and I really hope Warner Bros doesn’t mess up its movie adaptation. Now with this series finally over, I can’t wait to see what Amie and Jay has in store for us next in their new upcoming YA sci-fi series Andromeda Cycle.

Recommend it?
An infinite number of times, YES, YES, YES!!!

I read it and agree with your statement about it not being your favorite in the series. Mine either. I liked Asha and Rhys but because the whole book wasn’t about them and you spent their chapters wondering if Rhys was a good guy or bad guy it was hard to totally commit. Spot on review, good job!

Thank you, Deborah! The relationship between Asha and Rhys developed too fast in the book and that’s why it became hard for me to connect with them but overall it was a great conclusion.

I’m glad to hear this didn’t disappoint! I must admit, though, that I’m in the minority and I really don’t care for AIDAN. I think it disrupts the formatting of the rest of the book too much.

Thank you, Becky! The format of the book might give you a hard time at the beginning but as the story progresses it’ll get easier. I gave the first book 3.5 stars and I didn’t expect that it would become one of my favorite series. So, I really hope you enjoy it!
