When the entire kindled community rolls into Hawthorne for an annual festival, a rumor begins spreading that someone is practicing forbidden magic. Then people start to go missing. With threats closing in from every side, no one can be trusted. Jemmie and Crowe will have to put aside their tumultuous history to find their loved ones, and the only thing that might save them is the very flaw that keeps Jemmie from fully harnessing her magic. For all her years of feeling useless, Jemmie may just be the most powerful kindled of all.

 

Before getting into the review, I need to say this was my first Jennifer Rush book and I don’t have any idea what to expect from her but still, the synopsis got me pretty much excited. Well, Devils and Thieves turns out to be an absolutely entertaining Urban fantasy read, and despite few issues, I really loved it. I’m actually not a fan of biker MC books but this one was a bit different than I had expected. If you’re a fan of UF then I think you’ll enjoy reading this book.  The characters aren’t really my favorite but I still enjoyed reading about them.  Some aspects of this book seemed very clichéd especially the romance but I didn’t mind them because it wasn’t really gag worthy or too annoying enough for me to hate it. 

In a small town of Hawthorn, Eighteen Year old Jemmie Charmichael  grew up around the magical users who calls themselves Kindled. Humans aren’t aware of Kindled and it is absolutely forbidden to use any magical powers before them or against them.  Jemmie is a magical user but she can’t do a single spell without getting herself fainted. She’s an anomaly among her own people and she feels pretty much useless, but her best friend Alex feels totally opposite about her. Life gets even harder for her because everyday she has to face Alex’s older brother Crowe, the current leader of their turf and also the boy who snubbed her the next day after a makeout session.

Every year the kindled community holds an annual festival and this time it was held at the Black devils turf. Crowe gets an info that someone is practicing a forbidden magic and his sights are set on the new leader of death stalkers. After the tragic incident which was happened at the last annual festival, The Black Devils and The death stalkers has become greatest rivals to each other. When people starts missing in the festival, Crowe blames Death Stalkers but soon they realize that no one is to be trusted. Crowe and Jemmie team up together reluctantly to find them which eventually re-ignites their attraction towards each other. Jemmie’s power is the only thing that can save them but first, she needs get a hold of her power before it’s too late.

Jemmie isn’t really a refreshing protagonist but she wasn’t too annoying either. She’s very insecure about her magic which makes her feel weak and she blames herself for her father abandoning her mother rand her. She feels she doesn’t belong among her own people and her best friend Alex is the only light in her life. Honestly, I’m glad she isn’t a damsel in distress character but I didn’t like the way she’s obsessed over Crowe because I totally hate characters who’re obsessed over a hot guy. I liked her character development at the end though. Crowe was definitely a swoon worthy character with deadly powers that can end a life in a snap. At first, I didn’t liked him at all. He seemed like a total jerk and it took some time for me to like him. As for the romance between him and Jem, I have to be honest that it was clichéd but I still found myself enjoying it. Even though they’re not together, you can literally feel the attraction between them whenever they encountered each other. They have some history together and it’s too bad we only have a few glimpses of it. There’s also another male love interest in this book. Yep, you heard me right there’s a love-triangle which is another cliched part of this book. It’s too obvious whom Jem likes and I felt a bit bad about the other guy. Alex, Crowe’s sister and Jem’s BFF was totally fun. She’s spunky, daring, and bit of a trouble maker. I really liked the friendship between these two and how they’re loyal to each other. Jemmie’s parents didn’t played much part in this book but at least, they appeared whenever needed. 

The plot was totally entertaining but also predictable and little clichéd! Nonetheless, it didn’t ruin my enjoyment because the story was very interesting which kept me reading till the end and I never felt bored. The pacing was great. There are some twists in the second half which are not too hard to guess and the last part was totally chaotic, intense, and suspenseful. The author’s writing style is addictive and I absolutely loved it. The book was told from Jemmie’s first person pov and I really hope we have Crowe’s pov in the next book. The setting was good but I think it could’ve been more developed. I quite enjoyed the interesting magical elements even though I struggled a bit to understand it. The forbidden magic thing at the end gave dark vibe to the story which I really loved. I would love to know more about the other clubs and what magical abilities they possess. 

Overall, I really liked it! Despite its cons and pros, this book was an enjoyable read filled with magic, romance, drama, and some action. It was really a good start for a new series and I would definitely look forward to the next book.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who are into YA urban fantasy but I must warn you, there are some cliched parts in the book so it’s either a hit or miss book for some people. Personally, I think this book is definitely worth a shot!
