Penryn & the End of Days Trilogy By Susan EE [Binge Read] [Review]

Angelfall (Copy)Hello Everyone! It’s been long a time since I’ve binge read a series so last month I’ve decided to binge read the Penryn & the end of the days trilogy together with my blogger buddy Poulami @daydreaming books. I have already read the first two books when it was released but I haven’t gotten around to read the finale yet so when poulami invited me for a buddy read, I couldn’t resist. I re-read the first two books to refresh everything before going into the finale and it’s the best decision I’ve made because this made the story a lot more enjoyable to read. I’m very picky when binge reading trilogies or series and I’m so glad this turned out to be pretty entertaining.

This is my favorite epic scene in the whole trilogy!

Synopsis:

The story is set in a post apocalyptic world where earth is invaded by angels and humanity is struggling to survive while fearing the angels who are either keeping them as slaves or ruthlessly killing them with no mercy. Seventeen Year Old Penryn Young is one of the survivor who lives with a mentally deranged mother and her little sister paige who is wheel chaired. One night when she comes across a fight between angels, she helps an angel which gets her sister kidnapped by the other angels. In order to get her sister back, she needs the help from the angel she just rescued and she wouldn’t back down until she gets her sister back. During their journey to find her sister, they come across some horrifying things they never could’ve imagined possible.

Initial Thoughts:

Angelfall is one of my favorite books and I wasn’t even bored while re-reading it instead it was quite the opposite. Penryn and Raffe are one of my favorite OTP’s and I absolutely adored their relationship in Angelfall, the first book in the trilogy. The second and third book is mostly focused on the plot but It also has some romance that I absolutely loved. I liked the characters, the post apocalyptic setting and also the wonderful writing. The finale of the story is  pretty good but to be honest, I was expecting more from it. Nevertheless, It was entertaining through out and I loved all the action and the slow burn romance.

Characters/Relationships:

I loved all the characters in this book and also the character development. Penryn is one of my favorite badass female protagonist. She’s strong, stubborn, brave and very realistic. Her love for her little sister is pretty admirable and I enjoyed the sisterly bond between them. Raffe aka Raphael is totally swoon worthy character. He is fun, cocky, caring and sometimes a bit serious. I quite enjoyed the relationship between Penryn and Raffe. They don’t trust each other at first but they need each others help in order to survive. The slow burn romance is one of the best parts I loved about this series. Raffe denies his feelings for Penryn for a long while but eventually he finally gives into it. They both have a great chemistry with lots of tension and their romance is definitely swoon worthy.  Paige, Penryn’s little sister is also one of the major characters in this trilogy. I felt sad with what happened to her and it was pretty horrifying thing but I enjoyed her character in the second and the third book. She was so cute but pretty much deadly at the same time. Obadiah West aka Obi is an interesting character but it seems like the author didn’t gave much attention to him as he deserved. The twins Dee and Dum are pretty hilarious. They brought lots of humor to the plot and I absolutely loved them. I also liked Pooky Bear, Raffe’s angel sword which seems to possess feelings even though it is an inanimate object. I enjoyed the fun relationship between Pooky bear and Penryn. Belial is a fallen angel who gets punished for marrying daughter of man. He is a pretty hateful guy who seems to have a personal grudge on Raffe but at the end, I felt sorry for him when everything is finally revealed. The Villain of the story didn’t seem that much villainy to me but he sure seemed like a weird psychopath who always maintains cool persona on the outside.

Plot/Setting/Writing:

This series has a wonderful plot but the ending could’ve been much better. Among all the three books, the first book is my favorite because its a total perfection and I loved every minute of it. Though the second and third book are  pretty enjoyable reads, I felt something missing in them but it doesn’t mean that I don’t love them. The whole trilogy is action packed and the plot has several twists that kept me on my toes till the end. The whole story is told from Penryn POV[first-person] but I wish it was told in dual POV because I really wanted to know what’s going on in Raffe’s mind. The writing is captivating through out and easy to understand. I loved the post-apocalyptic setting which seemed very realistic.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, it is a great series filled with action, romance, adventure and some angel politics. The ending seemed kinda romantic but I’m not sure how they’re going to have their happily ever after because he’s still immortal and she is human. Anyways, I loved how everything wrapped up in the end and I’m glad that I’ve finally finished this series.

Here’s the best things that we both loved about this series:

I sooo agree with everything you said and that picture at the top, it’s one of my favourite scenes as well!! The ending was a bit underwhelming and there were certain parts that I wanted more but overall, it was such an intriguing series filled with so much action and adventure. And the romance between Penryn and Raffe was just so swooooony! Anyway, I’m glad you loved it as much as I did. Great series review!!

This series! ❤ I loved pretty much everything about it, even the fact that it made me bawl my eyes out XD
I definitely enjoyed the fact that none of the books focused too much on the romance, especially the final two. It would have been so cool to know what Raffe was thinking too! But then it probably wouldn't be as tension worthy 😉
Great review, Raven! And so glad you loved this series as much as I did ^^

I loved this series too! But I felt the same way about the ending. I definitely expected more, and there were SO many unanswered questions. That killed me a little. BUT this still goes down in my favorite dystopian lists since I loved the characters, romance, action etc. I’m so glad you loved this series so much too!!

PS This series gave me nightmares because I’m originally from NorCal….A little north of San Francisco… (lived there 24 years and still go back to visit) and I could visualize every place so crystal clear, it freaked me out haha!

Yay for finding another series to add to your favorites. I love when that happens!

YES!! The scene at the end of the first book…I’ll just say the tank part so as not to spoil if someone reads this comment. That was recurrent lol! I went to that area a lot for work, along with going to all the other places listed in all the books, so it was all too vivid for me lol. I’m a total baby!😂🙈
