Within these pages lie kingdoms with castles and princes who fall in love with fair maidens, but make no mistake−this is no fairytale.

His father’s kingdom is on the brink of upheaval and at the center of it all is an ordinary girl who could be the key to its undoing. When faced with the ultimate choice, will he choose the girl he’s falling in love with or the kingdom he has sworn to protect?

An ordinary girl with an extraordinary past… All she wants is to be free. What she doesn’t realize is that freedom comes with a price she can’t afford to pay. She’s forced to accept the proposal of a prince she despises, even though her heart belongs to someone else… his brother.

Seventeen-year-old Rema lives in a brutal kingdom where travel between regions is forbidden, people are starving, and looking at someone the wrong way can mean death. Nineteen-year-old Darmik is the king’s son and Commander of the King’s Army. He spends his days roving the island, doing his father’s bidding and trying to maintain control over the people.

When a chance encounter throws Rema and Darmik together, they share an instantaneous connection, but any sort of relationship between them is strictly forbidden. Darmik’s brother, the Crown Prince, notices Darmik’s interest in Rema and, in a calculated, political move, blackmails her. Faced with an impossible choice, Rema is forced to sacrifice her heart in order to save her family.

As Rema is taken to the palace with the Crown Prince, Darmik confronts the growing rumor that a legitimate blood heir to the throne exists and is trying to overthrow Darmik’s family. In Darmik’s quest to hunt down and kill the threat, he discovers that nothing is as it seems. Locked in the king’s castle, Rema finds herself a key player in a massive power struggle. When Darmik shows up, she’s not sure if she can trust him. The line between friends, enemies, and loyalty becomes blurred. As truths are unlocked, Rema understands that she just might be the key to finding the rightful heir and restoring peace to the kingdom… if she can manage to stay alive long enough.

First of all, I’d never expected to binge read the whole series and secondly, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It was totally an unputdownable read!!! I had finished the first book in one sitting and after I was finished with the first, I picked up the second. Though the story was somewhat predictable it was well executed and engaging through out. I usually don’t like books with predictable plots but this was written in a way that never stopped intriguing me. I loved every aspect of this book including the characters, setting, plot and the writing style. Rema and Darmik are great characters and I enjoyed their exciting journey till the end.

I liked all the characters in this series and they connected so well with each other. My favorite characters are Rema, Darmik and Savenik. Rema is a strong female protagonist who is stubborn, smart, bold, beautiful and prideful. She grew up with her aunt and Uncle who are horse breeders and she loves horse riding. I loved the character development of Rema in the second book where she becomes a strong women who can defend herself. Her hidden heritage was pretty predictable but I was interested to see how she’d deal with it when it was finally revealed. Darmik is definitely a dark knight in shining armor. He is a prince and also the commander of the King’s army. He is famous for being deadly and ruthless towards his enemies but he isn’t totally cruel like his brother Prince Lennek and his father, the king. I pretty much hated Lennek, he was a total dick, wicked and a complete manwhore. When Darmik meets Rema for the first time, he gets intrigued by her but when prince Lennek discovers his brother’s interest on her, he takes it as a challenge to snatch her for himself. I liked the slow burning forbidden romance between Darmik and Rema. It’s one of the best aspect I liked in this series. The chemistry between them is pretty hot and I absolutely enjoyed it. This series also has some interesting supporting characters especially Savenick , Ellie, Visha, Audek, Neco and also the Emperion assassin. Savenick is another tempting love interest who’ll appear in the second book and adds some excitement to the story. But don’t worry the triangle wasn’t annoying because our heroine has eyes for only one guy.

The plot was well written and well executed. It was definitely an engaging series that left me wanting for more. All the three books has great pacing and I never felt bored in any part. Though It has a satisfying conclusion, I felt pretty sad for the characters who didn’t made it out alive in the end.  Jennifer Davis has a beautiful writing style and I enjoyed devouring it. I also loved the world she has created! The story is mostly set on two fictional kingdoms called Greenwood Island and The Emperion which are ruled by cruel evil kings. If you don’t know, I have weakness for fantasy books that has kingdoms which are ruled by evil kings. I also loved the dual pov of the book which definitely made it easier for me to get connected to the main characters.

Overall, it was a great series filled with suspense, action, political intrigue and hot romance. I actually wanted to give this a try before reading it’s spin off series titled Reign Of Secrets and I’m so glad that I did. Now I’m pretty excited to read it’s spin off which sounded very intriguing from it’s blurb. I really hope it’s going to be as good as this series. 🤞

Recommend it?

I highly recommend this series to everyone who loves YA fantasy filled with action, suspense and romance.
