The magic is openly hostile to most mortals, but there are some it seems to covet, trying to lure them out into the night. While Becket struggles to protect her friends and family from predatory creatures of the night, she is constantly tempted to shrug off her responsibilities and join them.

This book was spooky and thrilling to read. It’s been a long time since I’ve read an urban fantasy and I’m glad that It turned out to be a intriguing read. The concept is very unique, I haven’t read anything like this before and I absolutely enjoyed reading it. This book does have it’s flaws but I loved the atmosphere the author has created and the story was exciting enough to keep on reading. The only aspect that I didn’t liked in this book was the triangle and romance which really felt like meh.

Beckett is a normal high school girl who has a crush on her best friend’s boyfriend and looking forward to college. Her parent’s are divorced and she lives with her father who is also a police commissioner of the city. She’s basically a loner who has only one best friend named Piper. Her normal life turns upside down when she stumbles across a crying baby on a dark alley at the night and by helping him, she accidentally releases chaos in the living world. Later, strange things starts to happen around her city and inanimate objects comes to life at every night frightening everyone. In the mornings, the city looks normal and safe but at nights, the city turns in to a living nightmare and everyone are bounded to their homes for their safety. Beckett doesn’t understand what’s really happening  and it gets more worse when people starts to roam around the city acting strange with dark behavior. It seems Philadelphia is the only city that is going through this horror and everyone believes it was some kind of virus but it is more sinister and dangerous than they had thought.

I didn’t liked Beckett in the beginning due to her being a typical insecure teen and also because of her crushing on her best friend’s boyfriend Luke but as the story progressed she started to act more maturely and after that, I started to like her. Luke is okay but he wasn’t that much impressive instead I found Aleric to be far more interesting. Aleric is a dark and mysterious character and I always look forward to his appearances. Piper, Beckett’s best friend is another interesting character that I liked. Although I did like her, I hated her when she turned into such a bitch. And not to forget, Billy, the metal goat creature seemed sort of funny but also terrifying. As for the romance, like I already said, it was totally meh. There’s no chemistry between Beckett and Lucky and honestly, I liked them together but it felt a bit wrong too.

The plot was pretty good and exciting. The book started slow and the pace slowly picks up when Beckett starts to get encounters with the strange things. I can’t say it was a mind blowing read but the mystery surrounding the story is the major aspect of this book that held my interest through out. I loved the world building. It was spooky, dark and creepy and it definitely felt like living in a nightmare. The writing is simply amazing. The author has described everything so vividly that easily gave a clear picture to imagine. Although I did enjoyed the story, there were still some things that left as a mystery, like the other world and also the real identity of Aleric.

Overall, it was good and enjoyable read. I don’t know whether it is a stand-alone or a series but the story did ended with a cliffhanger so I think there’s going to be a sequel and I’ll definitely look forward to it.

Definitely!!! I highly recommend this book to the readers who are into spooky, supernatural, urban fantasy and creepy horror thrillers.
