SUMMARY: The Shades in Chaos have one goal: get to Earth Realm and wreak havoc. For a select group of people called Realmwalkers, sleep is the gateway to another realm known as Chaos.
When 17-year-old Addy is called to Chaos, she yearns to conquer her crippling fears and prove her mettle by fighting alongside her fellow Realmwalkers. While she hopes to impress their handsome leader, Sam, she’s also keenly driven by the urge to protect the ones she loves on Earth.
The Realmwalkers are baffled, however, when they encounter a powerful and seemingly invincible Shade with strange motives and a dark obsession with Addy. As they work to unravel the mystery to defeating this new threat, Addy finds herself at odds with the Walkers. Gut instinct says to put her faith in Mikhail, the black sheep of the group, but she fears losing the respect and friendship of the others.
Addy is willing to die to keep Earth safe, but the Walkers are her new family, and she’s on the verge of falling in love. With Addy coming into her own, death shouldn’t be on the horizon. But when the doors of hell are ripped open, there are no guarantees.
I have mixed feelings about this book because I liked the unique concept and also the intriguing world building but there wasn’t enough action which is a bit disappointing for me. The characters are pretty good but the typical romance in this book was kinda turn off. Nonetheless, it was enjoyable read and a good introduction to the Realmwalker’s series.
17 year old Addy is a high school student who leads a boring life but her life completely changes when she’s called to the chaos where she meets some strangers who calls themselves realmwalkers. She’s surprised to find that she’s also a realmwalker and she develops a deep bond of friendship with the other realmwalkers. While being in the chaos, she gets attracted towards the leader of the chaos named sam and always tries hard to impress him. When she gets in trouble with a powerful shade who’s pretty obsessed with her, Mikhael the black sheep of the group saves her in time. Addy gets interested in Mikhael and knows that he wasn’t what he seems to be and tries to befriend him even though others were against it. When Addy discovers a new threat that might put all her beloved ones on earth realm in danger, she risks everything to save them.
I don’t know why but I can’t connect with any of the characters. Addy is an ok character but I can’t say she’s a great character either and sometimes her adoration towards sam really annoyed me. Sam is someone who has great leadership characteristics. I expected him to have hard and cold personality but it turns out he was really a nice guy. Mikhael is kinda mysterious character who keeps to himself and that’s what made me curious about him. He is my favorite character and I felt pretty bad with how he was treated as a pariah from his own group. There’s a typical romance between Sam and Addy but it wasn’t interesting enough because the romance felt pretty dull and also the lack of chemistry between them. As for the supporting characters, I liked Harmony, the eight year old realmwalker who macts much older than she is, the other supporting characters are also nice but they aren’t memorable enough to describe.
The plot was good but it wasn’t mind blowing either. I expected this book to be heavily action packed but I was wrong. The first book mostly focused on introducing the world and how the realmwalkers fights against the shades but there is some twist at the end part that makes it worthwhile to read the next book in the series. I loved the world building and also the idea of shades. The dream world of chaos is very intriguing and refreshing. It was very unique and simple enough to easily get into it. The pacing of the story was decent through out and the author has a nice writing style which I really enjoyed. The book was written in Addy’s POV but I think it would’ve been more enjoyable if it was written in alternative POV because Addy was restricted to fight against shades until she’s completely trained enough to face them while the other’s goes out to hunt the shades.
Overall, I liked it! I’m not sure if I would continue with this series, It totally depends on the second book.
Despite the issues, I would definitely recommend it cause it seems so many readers has loved it and maybe I’m the only one who has issues with it. If you want to read this book, then do give it a try because it’s definitely worth a shot.
