SUMMARY: This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Illuminae is a refreshing sci-fi space adventure novel written in a unique format and I pretty much liked it. This book is really a treat for every sci-fi book lovers. It consists of visually stunning space ship designs, reports, IM chats, interviews and emails etc. Amie Kaufman is a great author and I’m already familiar with her other amazing sci-fi series titled Starbound. Both Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are famous authors and when I first heard about Illuminae, I was really excited about it and it became one of my highly anticipated books. It was satisfying read but I must admit the first part was kinda slow and boring but the second part totally made up to it. Overall, it was amazing and thrilling.

When Kady Grant has officially broke up with her boyfriend Ezra Mason, she didn’t expected her day is going to turn into more disastrous when they are suddenly invaded by BeiTech. There was chaos everywhere with thousands of people dead and reluctantly they had to team up together to escape from enemy warship which was hot on their trail. After escaping from the enemy warship, they both get aboard in different space ships named Alexander 78V and Hypatia. Now they are both refugees of kerenza and they are placed in different ships but with the help of Kady’s  hacking sills they get to communicate with each other through IM chats and emails. Everything was going fine but suddenly something happens to a ship named Copernicus resulting thousands of Kerenza civilians residing in it dead which raises too many questions. Everyone in Alexander are confused with their ship’s AI’s(AIDAN) strange behavior and there’s also a deadly virus released by BeiTech which is fast spreading and mutating. Kady, who was in Hypatia  wanted to know what really happened to Copernicus and for that she really going to need her ex-boyfriend’s help who’s in Alexander.

Kady and Mason are great MC’s and I really liked them. Kady is quite an awesome character who is intelligent, sarcastic and brave. Illuminae is actually written in third person POV which is something that I don’t like in a book  but I pretty much enjoyed reading this. In most of the book, both of the MC’s don’t meet physically but they communicate with each other through IM chats which also describes their personalities really well and I really enjoyed it a lot. The supporting characters are also quite good especially AIDAN and Zhang. Even though AIDAN is an artificial intelligence, he  played a major role in this book and also my favorite character besides Kady.

The plot was truly fantastic and exciting. As for the unique format of the book, I was a bit struggled at the beginning but later on I got used to it. My only problem with this book was the pacing because the first part of the book is slow-paced and seemed kinda boring with the medical reports, interviews and too much info dumping. Honestly, I was going to rate it 3 stars but the second part totally changed my mind. Some readers might feel bored at the beginning but don’t give up on it just wait until AIDAN enters the scene cause that’s where things start to get interesting and you’ll definitely stick to it until the end. It has impressive writing style which was both funny and strong and the IM chats seemed very realistic. All the characters in it are well built and well connected to each other.

Despite my issue with the pacing, I loved it. There’s no cliffhanger at the end but I’m dying to know what’s going to happen next. So, hell yeah I’m definitely going to continue with this series. Illuminae is an awesome sci-fi read with perfect mix of space adventure, action and romance and highly recommended. If you love reading sci-fi books then you must read this book.

Yeah, I can pretty much understand! Most of the newly released books costs too much that we had to rely on ebooks. Illuminae is visually a stunning book and a must have paperback/hardback. I hope you enjoy when you get around to read it. 😀

I have seen this book everywhere, but I haven’t even bothered to even look at the synopsis. Shame on me! This sounds freaking amazing and it is going on my TBR immediately! Great review…and advice to keep going!
