SUMMARY: Ruth Carver has always competed like her life depends on it. Ambitious. Tough. Maybe even mean. It’s no wonder people call her Ruthless.
When she wakes up with a concussion in the bed of a moving pickup truck, she realizes she has been entered into a contest she can’t afford to lose.
At a remote, rotting cabin deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ruth’s blindfold comes off and she comes face-to-face with her captor. A man who believes his mission is to punish bad girls like Ruth. A man who has done this six times before.
The other girls were never heard from again, but Ruth won’t go down easy. She escapes into the wilderness, but her hunter is close at her heels. That’s when the real battle begins. That’s when Ruth must decides just how far she’ll go in order to survive.
Back home, they called her Ruthless. They had no idea just how right they were.
MY REVIEW: It’s a stunning thriller that kept me on edge from the start till the end. This book was a total thrill ride with heart pumping scenes. It was like watching a thrilling game of survival between a prey and predator.I really enjoyed reading this book which was truly gasp worthy and It’ll definitely make you hold your breath.I must say that it’s a mind-blowing YA thriller from the debut Author Carolyn Lee Adams.
The plot was engaging from the start with Ruth waking up in a unknown truck, hurt all over with a bloody concussion. She didn’t know what happened to her and she has no idea why someone would kidnap her.Her captor “wolfman” has a thing for punishing red heads who he thinks they are bad and needs to be purified. Wolfman wanted to completely break Ruth, but he totally underestimated her because she is ruthless, and she wouldn’t surrender that easily.Because it’s a thriller I wouldn’t reveal much about it.
I totally loved Ruth, she is a well-built character who was totally amazing, mentally strong, intelligent and who doesn’t give up easily even if it’s a hopeless situation. This book is a total non-stop action of how Ruth outsmarts the killer, and how she endures the harsh situations while running from the beast who is on chase for her.She was at nowhere in woods naked with a total absence of civilization and every route she takes would always leads her to a dead end. With no one to help her, she talks to the moon who is her only friend and companion around the woods. She thinks that she has gone insane that now she could also see the ghosts of dead girls who were killed by the wolf man.We also see the past glimpses of the wolf man’s story narrated in his POV in between the chapters which was kinda annoying to me when you are so deeply connected to the character.
The author did great in portraying how situations like this can psychologically effect the mind.Even though how dangerous her situation is, Ruth always stood strong and determined, and fought for the freedom from the hell she was in.I also liked her sense of humor too which made me like her more.
“there’s nothing I can do but stand in the middle of the road, because going forward hurts too much. Going forward means continuing to try, when trying is so hard. The world is filled with idiots and assholes and monsters. Where are the guardian angels? Where are the decent people? Where are the people with sense? Where have they all disappeared to? Why try, when no one will help me? No one will ever help me. I am alone.”
The most exciting part in this book was when the prey becomes the predator and the predator becomes the prey and I totally loved it.
The plot is fast paced with non-stop thrills and chills that you wouldn’t want to put it down for a second especially when the main protagonist is a fantastic character who possess great strength and tenacity.I love YA thrillers and this one definitely thrilled me even though there are some flaws in it which can be easily overlooked. The Author’s writing was so vivid that I could feel what the character is actually going through like all her anguish, frustration and helplessness. The story unfolds and draws you in-what will happen next and how will this dreadful situation end? Was she going to escape? Was he really going to kill her? will she ever meet her family again, will she finally confess her feelings to her friend? Overall, It’s a fantastic thriller and I highly recommend this book to everyone who are into thrillers.
